Is Window Tinting Legal in Colorado? What Colorado Springs Drivers Need to Know

If you’ve ever wondered whether the tint on your car is technically legal — or if you’re looking to get your windows tinted and want to make sure you stay within the law — you’re not alone. Window tint laws in Colorado can be a little confusing, especially when you see vehicles with dramatically dark windows and wonder how they got away with it.

At C&C Window Tint in Colorado Springs, we get these questions constantly. Here’s everything you need to know about Colorado’s tint laws so you can make smart, legal choices for your vehicle.

What Is VLT and Why Does It Matter?

Every tint law you’ll see references something called VLT — Visible Light Transmission. This is the percentage of light that passes through both the window glass and the tint film combined. A higher VLT means more light gets through (lighter tint), while a lower VLT means less light (darker tint). So a 5% tint is very dark (limo-style), while a 70% tint is barely noticeable.

Colorado law sets minimum VLT requirements for each window on your vehicle — meaning there’s a limit to how dark you can go.

Colorado Tint Laws by Window (2026)

Here’s the breakdown for passenger vehicles — sedans, SUVs, trucks, and vans:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed only on the top 4 inches (above the AS-1 line). That strip must allow at least 70% VLT. Full windshield tinting is illegal.
  • Front side windows (driver and passenger): Must allow more than 27% VLT. This is one of the more restrictive requirements in the state.
  • Rear side windows: Must also allow more than 27% VLT — unless your front windows and windshield allow over 70% VLT, in which case the rear windows can be any darkness.
  • Rear window: Same 27% VLT minimum applies. However, if your vehicle has side mirrors on both sides, there’s no legal limit on rear window darkness.

In plain English: most Colorado drivers can go to 28% on all four windows, and if you keep your front windows very light (over 70%), you can go as dark as you want in the back.

What Colors Are Banned?

Colorado law prohibits red, amber, and yellow tints. You’ll also want to avoid any reflective or mirrored finishes — Colorado does not allow them on any window. Stick to standard neutral or charcoal films and you’ll be fine.

Is There a Medical Exemption?

This one surprises a lot of people: Colorado does not recognize medical exemptions for window tint. Some other states allow darker tint for drivers with certain skin conditions or light sensitivity, but in Colorado, the same rules apply to everyone regardless of medical need.

What Happens If Your Tint Is Illegal?

Getting pulled over for illegal tint in Colorado is a Class B traffic infraction, which can carry fines ranging from $500 to $5,000. In some cases it can escalate to a misdemeanor. Beyond the fines, illegal tint during a car accident can also affect your liability under Colorado’s comparative negligence laws — meaning it could reduce any compensation you’re owed if visibility was a factor.

Bottom line: it’s not worth the risk.

Why Does Colorado’s Altitude Change the Tinting Conversation?

Colorado Springs sits at over 6,000 feet, and UV exposure increases roughly 4% for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. That means the sun here hits harder than it does in most of the country. A legal 28% ceramic tint in Colorado Springs blocks up to 99% of UV rays, protects your interior from fading, and dramatically reduces heat buildup in the summer — all within the law.

You don’t have to go illegal to get real protection. The right film at the right VLT does the job.
